Meet Dr. Gorgas

Meet Dr. Michael Gorgas, DC- San Diego Thyroid Specialist

Patients across San Diego County finally have a doctor who listens, tests thoroughly, and understands the deeper patterns behind hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.

I’ve been serving the San Diego community since 1983, helping patients understand their thyroid health with clarity and confidence. My training began in Miami, continued through my doctoral studies at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, and expanded into advanced work in functional neurology and functional medicine.

Over the years, I’ve held licenses in California, Hawaii, and Florida, directed clinical research, and authored Inversion for Health and Fitness. My approach blends decades of clinical experience with modern, evidence‑based functional testing — giving patients a clearer picture of what’s happening inside their bodies.

Most of the patients I see from San Diego, La Jolla, North Park, Mission Valley, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, and Oceanside have already tried the traditional medical route. Their TSH is “normal,” yet they still struggle with fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, brain fog, or mood shifts.

A normal TSH doesn’t always mean the thyroid is functioning well.

My role is to look deeper — at antibodies, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, nutrient patterns, adrenal function, gut health, and immune triggers — so we can understand why symptoms persist and what needs to be corrected.

A single lab marker rarely tells the whole story. That’s why I use advanced functional testing to uncover the root causes behind thyroid dysfunction — whether immune‑driven, metabolic, inflammatory, or stress‑related.

Together, we build a plan that supports the thyroid, gut, adrenals, and immune system. When the right systems are addressed, patients often experience meaningful improvements in energy, mood, weight stability, and overall well‑being.

My goal is simple: Help you feel like yourself again — with clarity, confidence, and a plan that makes sense.

Why Patients Choose Us

Why San Diego Patients Trust Our Approach to Thyroid Care

Four core principles guide how we help patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s — with a focus on clarity, root‑cause testing, and compassionate care.

  1. Most patients I meet have been told their thyroid is “fine” because their TSH is normal. In reality, true thyroid health requires a deeper look — beyond TSH and beyond medication alone.
  2. For many people, especially here in San Diego County, thyroid symptoms are driven by the immune system, not just the thyroid gland. Understanding this changes everything about how we treat it.
  3. Thyroid symptoms often connect to other systems — hormones, adrenals, blood sugar, digestion, and immune balance. I take a whole‑person approach so we address the real reasons symptoms persist.
  4. We use advanced functional lab testing to understand your unique patterns — not the “average” thyroid patient. Your plan is built around your labs, your symptoms, and your physiology
  5. What matters most is that you’re heard. I take the time to explain your labs, your symptoms, and the steps we’ll take together.
  6. Patients tell me this is the first time they’ve truly understood what’s happening in their bodies.

Healing works best when we work as a team. I guide the process, but you’re an active partner in your care — every step is explained, and every decision is made together.

If you’re unsure where to begin, we offer a complimentary consultation so you can meet with me, ask questions, and see whether our approach is the right fit.

A Unique Approach To Eliminating Your Low Thyroid Symptoms

For many patients across San Diego County, the journey with hypothyroidism begins the same way: a diagnosis, a prescription for thyroid replacement hormone, and the hope that symptoms will improve. For some, that’s enough. But for many others, fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, and sleep issues continue — even when their labs look “normal.”

That’s where our approach becomes different.

Why Our Approach Is Unique

To truly understand and manage thyroid symptoms, we have to look beyond the thyroid itself. The body works as an interconnected system, and the thyroid is influenced by the immune system, gut, adrenals, blood sugar, and inflammation. This is why we use a whole‑person, functional approach.

Because nearly 90% of low‑thyroid patients have an underlying autoimmune component, we take a close, detailed look at the immune system and the factors that may be driving it.

How We Evaluate the Immune System

Understanding the immune system is essential for patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. We use advanced testing such as:

Lymphocyte Panel – to look at the ratios of T-Helper Cells, B Cells, T Cells, and Natural Killer Cells. From this test we can tell the functional configuration of the immune system and the likely sources of the dysfunction.

Cytokine Panel -Autoimmune conditions often fall into TH‑1 or TH‑2 dominance. This panel helps us determine which pathway is overactive so we can create a plan to calm and modulate the immune response.

With these results, we design a natural, targeted protocol to support and regulate the immune system — a crucial step in helping you feel better again.

Additional Testing We Use

Comprehensive Thyroid Panel

We evaluate the full thyroid picture, including TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3, T3 uptake, and Reverse T3. There are more than 30 functional thyroid patterns, and most are missed when only TSH and T4 are measured.

Complete Metabolic Panel

We assess anemia patterns, blood sugar regulation, liver and kidney function, and lipid metabolism — all of which influence thyroid health.

Food Sensitivity Testing

Many thyroid patients have immune‑driven food sensitivities without realizing it. Each exposure triggers inflammation, disrupts thyroid metabolism, and worsens autoimmune activity. Identifying and removing these foods is essential.

Intestinal Permeability (“Leaky Gut”) Testing

A large percentage of thyroid patients have increased intestinal permeability. When the gut lining breaks down, food particles enter the bloodstream and trigger immune reactions, increasing inflammation and worsening symptoms.

Gastrointestinal Infection Testing

Bacterial imbalances, parasites, and dysbiosis are common in autoimmune and thyroid patients. If these issues aren’t identified and addressed, thyroid function may never fully stabilize.

Adrenal Testing

The adrenal glands regulate cortisol, blood sugar, and sleep‑wake cycles. Many thyroid patients have underlying adrenal dysfunction that must be addressed for full recovery.

A Personalized, Root‑Cause Plan

Every patient is unique. After reviewing your history, previous labs, and consultation findings, we determine which functional tests are appropriate. From there, we create a customized plan that may include:

  • Dietary changes
  • Lifestyle adjustments
  • Targeted supplementation
  • Immune and gut support
  • Thyroid‑specific strategies

This approach helps us address the root causes of your symptoms — not just mask them.

For many patients, this becomes the difference between a life of fatigue, weight struggles, and frustration… and a life with renewed energy, clarity, and stability.
